Seit ihr Vater in einer Irrenanstalt ist, tut Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood) alles, um ihn zu vergessen. Als er eines Tages frisch entlassen vor ihrer Tür steht, geht der Ärger wieder von vorne los. Exzentrisch und manisch depressiv, jagt Charlie (Michael Douglas) einen Goldschatz spanischer Missionare. Weil seine Entschlüsselungsversuche versteckter Hinweise zu einem nahe gelegenen Supermarkt führen, beginnt er dort nach dem Schatz zu graben.
