-Il film è tratto da un romanzo di John Wainwright, che Claude Miller aveva già portato sul grande schermo nel 1981 nel film francese Guardato a vista (Garde à vue), di cui Under Suspicion è un remake. 



-Nel film del 1981 non si festeggiava il carnevale bensì il capodYears, e Hearst era un notaio.



San Juan, durante i festeggiamenti del carnevale, vengono ritrovati i corpi di due bambine prima violentate e poi uccise. Il Capitano Benetez (Morgan Freeman) sospetta dell'amico/nemico Henry Hearst (Gene Hackman), un facoltoso avvocato. Durante l'interrogatorio che durerà tutta la notte, Benetez cercherà di far confessare Hearst, dando vita ad un guerra psicologica e di nervi, chiusi tra le mure del commissariato.
