Henry Carter (Kevin Spacey) is een celebrity psychiater met sterk uiteenlopende cliënten, van een onzekere jonge schrijver tot een agent met obsessieve dwangneurotische trekjes en een actrice met vage toekomstplannen. Zijn eigen leven verloopt ook niet helemaal op rolletjes. Hij neemt voor het eerst een pro deo project aan en besluit een getraumatiseerd tienermeisje te behandelen. Zij is niet de geijkte Hollywood Hills tiener, maar koestert wel een grote liefde voor de filmwereld, waar Henry juist zo moe van is.
