Die Reibungen zwischen Fidel Castro und Ernesto "Che" Guevara werden nach Bewältigung der Kubakrise so groß, dass Guevara zur Durchsetzung seines Traums von "zwei, drei, vielen Vietnams" loszieht, um in weiteren Ländern seine Vorstellung von Guerillakrieg durchzusetzen. Nach irgonrierten Reden vor der UNO in New York landet er im April 1965 im Kongo, um dort den Befreiungskampf zu steuern, stellt aber schnell fest, dass er in Afrika zum Scheitern verdammt ist. 1966 geht Guevara mit der in Kuba verehrten Tamara Bunke und anderen Gleichgesinnten nach Bolivien, um gegen die vom CIA unterstützten Regierungstruppen vorzugehen.
