Eestist pärit baltisakslane A. T. von Middendorff juhtis 19. sajandi keskel teadusekspeditsiooni Euraasia põhjatippu - Taimõri poolsaarele. Ajastule omaselt tegeles Middendorff erinevate valdkondadega loodusteadustest etnoloogiani, olles kõigis küsimustes teerajaja. Selle ekspeditsiooniga kirjutas Middendorff oma nime ajalukku. 





Poolteist sajandit hiljem otsustasid eesti teadlased oma kuulsa kaasmaalase teekonna järele teha, et näha, kui palju see kauge põhjapiirkond aastatega muutunud on. Nelik kohtus Avami tundras pärismaalastega, kelle esiisade abiga Middendorff jõudis Põhja-Jäämereni. Viimased 500 kilomeetrit ookeanini on tänapäeval täiesti inimasustuseta, ometi pole tundra kaugeltki tühi. Loomariigis käib suvel vilgas elu.
