Overview
Electric Sheep, Packs 3-7 from flock 243. Each pack is a collection of hundreds of sheep you can download and manually install into the Electric Sheep. The pack number is derived from the 2nd digit of the sheep in the pack, so pack 3 contains 13XXX, pack 4 14XXX, and so on. Packs are courtesy of <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://scottdraves.com/splash.html">Scott Draves</a> and <a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="http://community.electricsheep.org/">the Electric Sheep</a>.
Instructions
Download and copy to your content/mpeg folder (on XP look in C:\Document and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ElectricSheep, or on Vista C:\ProgramData\ElectricSheep; on Mac ~/Library/Application Support/Electric Sheep, and on Linux in ~/.electricsheep).
Note that both “Application Data” and “ProgramData” are hidden folders, and may not be visible depending on your settings. To view hidden files, select “Folder Options” from the Control Panel. From there, select the “View” tab, then select the option “Show hidden files and folders.”.
About Electric Sheep
Drawing its title from Philip K. Dick's novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, the Electric Sheep is a cyborg mind. It harnesses the collective intelligence of 60,000 computers and people creates abstract art with mathematics and Darwinian evolution. The result is seamless, organic, and infinite.
First created in 1999 by Scott Draves, the Electric Sheep is a form of artificial life, which is to say it is software that recreates the biological phenomena of evolution and reproduction though mathematics.
It is a distributed system, with all participating computers working together to form a supercomputer that renders animations, called “sheep”. Each sheep is an animated fractal flame that is generally a beautiful and hypnotic display. You can join this project by downloading the Electric Sheep screen saver.
Anyone running the screen saver may vote for their favorite animations using the keyboard (up for a positive vote, down for a negative one). The more popular sheep live longer and reproduce according to a genetic algorithm with mutation and cross-over. Hence the flock evolves to please its global audience. You can also design your own sheep and submit them to the gene pool. The most popular sheep from the current flock can be viewed on the server.
The server also shows the family tree for each sheep, including its parents and offspring, and viewers can track family resemblance. The artist's Clade series shows a selection of family members in high resolution.
Like Draves' other software art, the Electric Sheep code is open source, which has allowed it to benefit from code contributions from many enthusiastic programmers. Now Draves serves as head Shepherd on a project with many participants.
How Electric Sheep Works
When your computer is idle, the screen saver (the client software) is activated and an animated fractal 'sheep' appears. Behind the scenes, the screen saver contacts a server and joins the parallel computation of thousands of computers in the generation of new sheep.
Each participating computer follows mathematical instructions, Draves' Flame algorithm, to render its own piece of the larger work. The images are sent back to a central server which compresses them into animations which are sent back out to the viewers.
