La storia e' ambientata circa nella New York dell'anno 3000, quando sulla terra e' tutto robotizato e i viaggi interplanetari sono diventati un giochetto da ragazzini. Protagonista della serie e' Philip J. Fry, un pony express che e' stato ibernato nel 1999 e ora, quasi 1000 anni dopo, viene scongelato, ritrovandosi catapultato in un mondo completamente diverso pieno di personaggi strani e al tempo stesso divertenti.
