La band
I Melvins sono un gruppo sludge metal fondato da Roger "Buzz" Osborne (detto anche King Buzzo, alla chitarra e voce), Mike Dillard (batteria) e Matt Lukin (basso) nel 1983 ad Aberdeen, Seattle nello Stato di Washington in USA.
Originariamente formati come band hardcore punk, la musica dei Melvins è influenzata dai Black Flag di My War del periodo punk rock, artisti di rock lento come Swans, e, più notevolmente dallo stile heavy metal dei Black Sabbath; tuttavia, il loro approccio idiosincratico, un bizzarro senso dell'umorismo, e una sperimentazione rende la loro categorizzazione difficile. Osborne che il suo stile di chitarra è più influenzato dai Black Flag che dai Black Sabbath. I loro ritmi spesso enormemente lenti, e il loro sound sludge metal fu di notevole influenza sulla musica grunge, in particolare Nirvana, Soundgarden, e moltre altre band provenienti da Seattle, Washington.
