From Allmusic.com

This is a very unusual live date featuring a Mingus-led quartet, which came about because both Jon Faddis and Bobby Jones missed the plane. Mingus was used to working around sudden changes of personnel, since he was known to fire players in the middle of a recording session or live performance and still keep going. With alto saxophonist Charles McPherson, pianist John Foster and drummer Roy Brooks along for the ride, Mingus kicks things off with a long medley including "Stormy Monday," "I'll Remember April," "Mood Indigo" and "Take the 'A' Train." Both "Fables of Faubus" and the improvised "Blues for Some Bones" have their moments, but it is the very loose approach to "Body and Soul" that is the gem in this live date. The bassist makes up for the missing soloists, taking up a good deal of solo space, but frankly this temporarily smaller group doesn't succeed all that well because of a lack of time rehearsing as a quartet.
