Die Story:
Die ungestüme siebzehnjährige Effi Briest (JULIA JENTSCH) heiratet auf Rat ihrer Eltern Baron Instetten (SEBASTIAN KOCH), einen früheren Verehrer ihrer Mutter (JULIANE KÖHLER). Instetten ist ein gefühlsarmer Mann von Prinzipien, dem eine glänzende politische Kariere bevorsteht. Das Paar zieht zunächst in den kleinen Ostsee-Küstenort Kessin, wo Effi ein eintöniges Leben erwartet. Bis Major Crampas (MIŠEL MATICEVIC) auftaucht, ein Regimentskamerad Instettens und ein charmanter Frauenheld. Effi erfährt durch ihn, was Liebe und Leidenschaft bedeuten können. Es wird eine für Crampas tödliche Affäre. Effi aber wird – anders als bei Fontane – daran nicht zugrunde gehen.
