Diverse musical evocations abound tonight when splashy tourist sites (Respighi's dawn-to-dusk excursion to the Fountains of Rome), the broodingly dramatic atmosphere before a storm (Helen Grime's Virga), a three-deal poker game (Stravinsky's symphonic ballet score Jeu de cartes) and the majestic Caucasus (Balakirev's virtuoso oriental fantasy Islamey, orchestrated by Casella) are all powerfully explored when the BBC Symphony Orchestra is conducted in a wide-ranging programme by its new artist-in-association, Oliver Knussen. And the always eclectic Olly also finds time to slip in one of his own compositions, the splendid Horn Concerto.

Oliver Knussen, the BBC Symphony Orchestra's new artist-in-association, conducts a programme of music which demonstrates perfect mastery of the orchestra by the featured composers. 





With the second part of Respighi's Roman trilogy, there is a dawn-to-dusk tour of the city's most famous fountains. Then there's the first Proms performance of Helen Grime's dramatic evocation of the electric atmosphere before a storm. They are followed by Stravinsky's 1936, ballet Jeu de cartes, a musical poker game in three 'deals', ending with the Joker trounced by a royal flush.
