BBC Proms 2009

Saturday 08 August

7:00pm - 7:35pm

BBC Radio 3

There's always a festive air when the bright young things of the National Youth Orchestra play at the Proms and you can be sure of a carnival atmosphere tonight as they give the first ever Proms performance of Respighi's Roman Festivals, a technicolor assessment of the Eternal City's changing rituals. Earlier in the programme there's another flamboyant orchestral showpiece - Lutoslawski's vivid, folk-music inspired Concerto for Orchestra (1954). The concert opens with Tchaikovsky's much-loved Piano Concerto No 1 as Stephen Hough continues his Proms survey of all the composer's works for piano and orchestra. The NYO's new principal conductor Vasily Petrenko presides.

Radio Times reviewer - David Gillard

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Rob Cowan.

The National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain make its annual Proms visit with its new principal conductor, Vasily Petrenko - who made his Proms debut in 2008 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. Stephen Hough features in a popular favourite from Petrenko's homeland, Russia, as part of his Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto cycle.
