Thomas And Friends is a children's television series first broadcast in 1984. Prior to 2003 the programme was was named Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends. It follows the adventures of a group of trains and road vehicles who live on the fictional island of Sodor.
Many of the stories in the first five series were taken directly from The Railway Stories books by the Reverend W. Awdry. The books were created from stories which Awdry told his son Christopher during his recovery from measles, with many stories based on events from Awdry's personal experience. From series 6 onwards none of the programme episodes were based upon Awdry's books - instead new stories were created and additional characters introduced.
This twelfth series is the first to include computer generated imagery within the programme; the environments and engines are still mostly models filmed at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, but with animated engine faces and other CGI characters added by Nitrogen Studios in Canada. From Series 13 onwards the programme will be completely computer generated.
