Strange But True? Live Special

Broadcast:

ITV on 27th June 1997 (S03E11)

Summary:

Aired 50 years to the week of the 1st UFO sighting, Michael Aspel and Penny Smith present this 90-minute live special from London Television centre. Through the use of footage from the series and interviews with key figures and experts in the field, they aimed to answer the question 'Are some UFOs actually extraterrestrial in origin?' They are joined by six experts. Firstly, the belivers are authors Nick Pope, Timothy Goode and Stanton Freidman. The sceptics are Dr Chris French, psychologist; Dr David Hughes, astronomer; and Prof. Frank Close, theoretical physisist at Oxford.

The show presented five famous cases for debate by the panel:

Case One: Kenneth Arnold and beyond!

For 50 years, military and civillian pilots have noticed strange lights in the sky. On the 24th June 1947 a pilot was searching for a missing plane in Washington State when he saw nine flying objects. Kenneth Arnold said they moved "like a saucer skipping across water".

Case Two: The Rendlesham Forest Incident

Bentwaters and Woodbridge are two American run air bases in East Anglia. They are seperated by three miles of Rendlesham Forest. They had top security status. One Night at the Woodbridge base in December 1980, John Burroughs, an airmen, reported seeing what looked like a Christmas display.

Case Three: Gulf Breeze, Mexico

In November 11th 1987 Ed Walter saw a craft and was struck by a blue beam. Many of the objects have been filmed or photos have been taken of. 10s of 1000s of people have been attracted there. Ed Walter brought his UFO photos to Duane Cook, the editor of the Sentinel. Art Hufford, a church elder, saw a craft hovering above the trees. So many people responded to the newspaper with stories of UFOs.

Case Four: The NASA tape

A video tape taken inside Nasa was supplied by an astronaut investigator of a conversation between two astronauts, Mark Lee and Stephen Smith on February 18th 1997. They were talking about seeing mysterius lights outside their space shuttle. The conversation was abruptly terminated by NASA as it continued. Because it was in space, it could not be air traffic and the lights were acting too intelligently for space debris. What did they see.

Case Five: The Stealth Bomber

Could many UFO sightings be explained by witness' seeing this once top secret aircraft. Maybe UFOs are more concealed aircraft? They may come from Area 51 in Roswell, which is a training ground for new aircraft. This suggests the question of what the American government is trying to hide.
