Agatha Christie's The Pale Horse was first published in the UK by the Collins Crime Club on November 6 1961 and in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company the following year. The UK edition retailed at fifteen shillings (15/-) and the US edition at $3.75. The novel features her novelist detective Ariadne Oliver as a minor character, and reflects in tone the supernatural novels of Dennis Wheatley who was then at the height of his popularity.



Synopsis: Set in the early sixties sculpter Mark Easterbrook, who makes the mistake of escaping from a performance of Macbeth only to stumble on a dying priest who thrusts a list of names into his hands. The police naturally suspect Mark who with the help of Kate, tries to find the real killer. But their search for truth - and the link to other mysterious deaths - puts the life of other young women in danger. On the way there are three woman who dabble in witchcraft, a wicked stepmother and all manor of red herrings.
