A new series from Sky Sports of one-hour football chat shows presented by Jeff Stelling. Here presenting a series of considered, nostalgic discussions featuring true legends of the game. 


This week's episode takes a look at the story behind Stoke City's League Cup triumph of 1972, when under manager Tony Waddington the second oldest club in the Football League finally broke their 109 year hoodoo to win their very first trophy. The programme looks at how Waddington, who arrived in 1960, began to build a genuine footballing team throughout his first decade by mixing local lads with experienced pro's like Stan Matthews, Peter Dobing and George Eastham. In 1972 the club reached the Semi Final's of both the League Cup and FA Cup. Unfortunatly for the club a bad refereeing decision in the FA Cup semi final against Arsenal cost them dearly when winning 2-1 with seconds to go. 


That bitter memory of the season however was erased when the club triumphed at Wembley beating Chelsea 2-1 in the League Cup Final. Following this success the club began to build a squad that could well have won the Divsion One title in 1975 had injuries not taken their toll. Unfortunatly for Stoke City they had peaked in 1976 a freak gale blew the roof off an uninsured the stand and forced the sale of top striker Jimmy Greenhoff which led to a gradual decline and the end of Waddington reign. Guests on the show are Gordon Banks, Dennis Smith and Terry Conroy.
