February 12th 1997, a late winter evening at Wembley. England were currently top of the qualification group with 9 points from 3 games, Italy were second with 6 points from 2 games. The group winner qualified automatically for the France 98 finals while the runner-up had to make it via the treacherous play-off route. This was the first of the 2 big encounters between England & Italy, and under Glen Hoddle England certainly fancied themselves to get the right result, particularly at Wembley. Curiously, Hoddle was going with the patchy but doubtlessly inspirational Matt Le Tissier as Alan Shearer’s strike partner – considered something of a risky choice at the time. But it was an attack minded starting eleven including Beckham & Mac Mannaman in midfield with both Graeme LeSaux and Stuart Pierce in defence. Italy under Cesar Maldini still had the traditional defensive “fortress” feel about them with Maldini Junior (Paolo) but also had the flair and skill of Gianfranco Zola up front who had made himself immensely popular in England with his exploits for Chelsea.
