Von der ersten Einstellung an, einem Establishment Shot einer typisch amerikanischen Vorstadt-Umgebung, besticht American Beauty durch bewundernswerte Selbstsicherheit und Scharfsinn, die durch Kevin Spaceys ruhige Erzählung verkörpert werden. Spacey ist Lester Burnham, ein geplagter Jedermann, dessen Midlife Crisis das Rückgrat des Films bildet. Schon seine ersten Zeilen ziehen den Zuschauer mit stichelndem Fatalismus in ihren Bann. Wie Joe Gillis in Boulevard der Dämmerung erzählt auch Burnham seine Geschichte posthum aus dem Grab heraus. Ein kühner Start für einen Film, der diese Kühnheit mehr als rechtfertigt. Sozialsatire, Familientragödie und eine Wer-hat-es-getan-Geschichte miteinander verwebend, wagt Alan Balls erstes Bühnenskript, Genregrenzen zu verwischen und uns aus dem Gleichgewicht zu bringen, indem es nahtlos von schwarzer Komödie zu einem tief bewegenden Drama übergeht.
