Als een medewerkster van congreslid Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) dood wordt gevonden volgt een lang onderzoek. De vrouw blijkt immers tevens de maîtresse te zijn geweest van de politicus. Onderzoeksjournalist Cal McCaffrey (Russel Crowe) en zijn vrouwelijke collega Della Frye (Rachel McAdams) storten zich op de zaak. Er lijkt zich echter een probleem voor te doen. De vriendschap tussen Collins en McCaffrey lijkt een steeds groter struikelblok te worden tijdens dit onderzoek.
