James Allen, surnommé « Animal » a été condamné à perpétuité pour un meurtre commis pas son fils aîné, Darius. Il est déterminé à servir sa peine dans la célèbre prison de Folsom. Quand une émeute due à des problèmes raciaux éclate dans la prison, Animal est réticent à participer au combat qui fait rage - mais il ne peut échapper à son passé violent. Kasada, son ennemi juré
à Folsom arrive à tendre un piège à son fils James Jr. Darius fait tout pour disculper son frère et briser l'emprise de Kasada sur son père. Animal doit donc se battre pour sauver la vie de son fils et sa propre vie.
