The Proms begin an extensive celebration of Handel's music (marking the 250th anniversary of his death) with his satirical opera Partenope. Poking fun at the prevailing conventions of opera seria and sending up the amorous adventures of Queen Partenope of Naples, it was actually a bit of a flop in its day. But it's a modern opera director's dream and this concert version of the Royal Danish Opera's witty new modern-dress production should prove a lot of fun. Fine singing is assured with a cast led by 1993 Cardiff Singer of the World winner Inger Dam-Jensen and superstar countertenor Andreas Scholl.
