Fernab der Zivilisation, in einem Ort namens Barranca, der nur aus Sig Rumans Hotel samt angrenzenden Flugfeld zu bestehen zu scheint, betreibt ein Trupp todesverachtender Männer eine Fluglinie, die mit klapprigen Maschinen zweimal pro Woche die Post über einen schier unerreichbar hohen Pass zu bringen hat. Pilot Bat McPershon hat den Bruder eines Kollegen auf dem Gewissen und muss sich neu bewähren, ein Showgirl, Bonnie, entwickelt eine Hassliebe zu Jeff. Und über allem lauert der ständige Tod.
