Sailormoon è stato pubblicato su Nakayoshi, famosa rivista di shoojo della Kodansha, e raccolto in 18 tankobon dal 1992 al 1997. Narra, per chi ancora non lo sapesse, la storia di Usagi Tsukino, una ragazzina pasticciona e un tantino imbranata, che un giorno incontra una curiosa gattina nera con due cerotti che dei pestiferi ragazzini le hanno attaccato sulla fronte. La micetta si rivelerà essere una sorta di "gatto fatato" e parlante; le dice di chiamrsi Luna e di essere sulla Terra in cerca proprio di lei che è la reincarnazione della mitica Sailormoon, guerriera della Luna, che deve proteggere il pianeta da dei perfidi nemici appena risvegliatisi e intenzionati a conquistarlo.
Con il proseguire della storia nuove alleate si aggregano a Usagi e alla sua gattina, sono tutte guerriere che ricevono i poteri dai pianeti del Sistema Solare, inoltre viene a delinearsi una tragica storia d'amore fra Usagi e un misterioso guerriero in smoking.
