BBC Proms 2009

Saturday 01 August

7:30pm - 9:45pm

BBC Radio 3

The Proms have been going to the movies for years now but tonight's concert of iconic film music is a celebration of one great studio's amazing contribution to the genre - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Seventy-five years of MGM musicals jostle for concert space, so we're off to see the wizard, singin' in the rain, meeting in St Louis and generally moving in high society. But the original orchestral parts were consigned to the dump by MGM philistines in 1969 (ending up as landfill for a golf course) and we have tonight's conductor, John Wilson, to thank for diligently re-creating the scores from the soundtracks. And Wilson's own orchestra and some tip-top soloists - including Thomas Allen and Kim Criswell - are on hand to ensure that MGM also stands for Mighty Good Music.

Radio Times reviewer - David Gillard

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. Presented by Petroc Trelawny.

John Wilson and his hand-picked Orchestra celebrate the MGM musical with songs from unforgettable movie classics, including The Wizard of Oz, Meet Me in St Louis, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, High Society, Gigi and Singin' in the Rain.

Remarkably, although the original orchestral parts were lost when the studio destroyed its music library to make way for a car park, Wilson has succeeded in reconstructing the scores by painstakingly transcribing each soundtrack by ear. He is joined by starry singers from the classical and musical theatre worlds, as well as by the elite Maida Vale Singers
