"Armchair Theatre" was a British television drama anthology series, which ran on the ITV network from 1956 until 1968 in its original form, and was intermittently resurrected at various points during the 1970s. It was produced initially by ABC Television, and in the 1970s by ABC's successor company Thames Television. The word 'mystery' in the title was added to several early episodes.





Synopsis: Recently divorced Mrs Jean Hobley is already on to her fourteenth interview when she sees Personnel Manager CW Boatwright who is looking for a new shorthand typist for Mr Sutcliffe, director of the company. The interview soon becomes a disaster as a result of Jean's desire to leave at 4pm to pick up her child from school, while Sutcliffe is looking for something far more feminine. However the lonely Mr Boatwright sees in Mrs Hobley a kindred spirit and tells her "If you don't hear from us by five o'clock today," she's told, she will have got the post. Returning to her flat she awaits that call which will, she's sure, be another rejection. What follows a prolonged study in the dreaded experience of tense waiting, before the result of a job interview is known. Boatwright has other ideas as he works behind the scenes on Mrs Hobley's behalf.
