Most Haunted Live - Halloween 2005 - Jack the Ripper Day 3

Eerie in London's East End

History

This four night Halloween extravaganza sought to unearth the mystery of notorious Victorian serial killer Jack the Ripper. The team visited famous Ripper locations, Tower Bridge, Commercial Tavern, Click Prison Museum and the Blind Beggar pub.

Although Jack the Ripper was not the world’s first serial killer, he was certainly its first media murderer. His crimes took place in an era when literacy amongst the general populace was increasing and the press at large was very much a catalyst for social change. Tower Bridge has stood over the River Thames in London since 1894 and is one of the finest, most recognisable bridges in the World. It took eight years, five major contractors and the relentless labour of 432 construction workers to build the structure.

Opposite the Commercial St. Police station where all Ripper suspects were questioned and from where Police Officers were hailed to crime scenes, lies the Commercial Tavern. Built in 1865, the tavern is today a trendy meeting place with shuttered windows and chandeliers. But deep below the ground floor, there are dark and terrifying cellars and tunnels. These tunnels were said to link to the Police station and it is rumoured that John Merrick, The Elephant Man, may have hidden here or lived above the premises. The Clink Prison Museum is built on the foundations of one of the original prisons owned by the Bishop of Winchester. It is thought it got its name from the clinking of the manacles, fetters, chains and bolts that were used there. It was also the origin of the phrase "In the Clink", to mean in prison.

The Blind Beggar pub was built in 1894 on the site of the original Mile End tollgate. Legend has it that young aristocrat Simon de Montford went from gentry to poor beggar in the 1200s. Buildings on the site have since carried the name of the beggar. A lunatic asylum in the location was dubbed ‘Blind Beggar’s House’.

Phenomena

The walkways above Tower Bridge have had many reports of footsteps being heard and an unseen man whistling. Staff often have an uneasy feeling in this area. In the ‘Dead Man’s Hole’ area of the bridge, feelings of dread are felt and strange sounds are detected. Staff in the Commercial Tavern often have the feeling of being watched by something unseen and strange thuds and bangs are heard. In The Clink, a boy has been seen moving through the museum and disappearing through a wall and a young lady is reported to sit on the floor and rattle her shackles. The Blind Beggar pub has a long history of paranormal activity with whimpering, sobbing and blood curdling screams being reported.

Investigation

Night Three, The Clink. Derek connects with a religious figure, who is unhappy and looking for revenge. He also feels a young boy present who runs through the museum. During a séance, taps and thuds are heard and a cold breeze id felt. At one point, the table appears to move and many people report smelling smoke.
