Peter Bowles returns as Major Sinclair Yeates, a retired English army officer appointed Resident Magistrate for the West of Ireland in the days before Irish independence.
The Major has to maintain the balance between befriending the local townspeople and bestowing law and order upon the eccentric community.
This is not always an easy role, especially when there are people like Flurry Knox, eager to lead him astray and locals like the Foley clan intent on staying on the wrong side of the law.

Series Two, Episode One - A Horse! A Horse! (1984)
Flurry and Sally return from their honeymoon in Paris and Flurry is up to his old tricks again. He convinces Major Yeates to go on a hunting trip. Of course, Flurry's deceitfulness causes the Major to have an unfortunate accident, but Flurry gets just what he wants.
Philippa, meanwhile, has her own problems. Just minutes before guests are to arrive for Flurry and Sally's coming-home dinner, Philippa finds her new cook a little saucy and her sauce a little uncooked.
