Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor





Nach dem Debüt Blue Lines ist Protection der zweite und endgültige Schritt, um den Sound of Bristol zum Weltruhm zu führen. Manche müssen es zwar immer noch Triphop nennen, doch die freieren Geister sehen in diesen Slow-(E)Motion Tracks nichts geringeres als die Zukunft der Popmusik. Nachdem Massive Attack in der Tat einige Mühe darauf verwandt haben, ihre trippigen Beats und (alb-)verträumten Sounds mit supersanften Popmelodien zu vollenden, gerät der Soundclash mit dem Mad Professor zum Experiment in die entgegengesetzte Richtung: Der durchgeknallteste Knöpfchendreher in der britischen Dub'n'Reggae-Scene schleppt einige Songs von Protection in seine düsteren Hallräume, um aus ihnen relaxte Dub-Tracks zu machen. Mad Professor greift einzelne Beats'n'Pieces aus den Tracks heraus und schickt sie durch die wirren Windungen seiner Klang-Fantasmen. Flirrende HiHat-Sounds flattern so zum Beispiel mitten durchs Soundbild, wo sie früher ausschmückendes Detail am Rande waren. Eine Platte, die man auch lieben kann, wenn man die Originale a) haßt, b) nicht kennt oder c) ignoriert. Denn bereits, bei "Radiation Ruling The Nation", der Antwort auf den Song "Protection", neigt man das Haupt in Demut vor so viel majestätisch entspannter Schönheit.
