Total Recorder permet d'enregistrer au format .wav du son provenant de n'importe quelle source sonore connectée au PC ou bien provenant du PC lui même. Par défaut le logiciel est configuré de telle sorte qu'il enregistre le son joué par votre PC en interceptant celui-ci avant qu'il soit dirigé vers les haut-parleurs (il est ainsi possible d'enregistrer les musiques d'un jeu, une conversation vocale avec un correspondant, le son d'une vidéo...). L'enregistrement se met en marche automatiquement dès que le logiciel détecte un son joué.


Le fichier résultant peut être enregistré dans tous les formats de fichiers .wav (mono/stéréo, 8 bits/16 bits et de 8Hz à 44.1Hz) après avoir été recadré si nécessaire.
