The Alan Parsons Project è un gruppo rock progressivo e pop britannico nato nel 1975 per iniziativa di Alan Parsons ed Eric Woolfson, attivo, discograficamente parlando, dal 1976 sino ad inizio anni Novanta, anche se il periodo di maggior 

successo si ferma al 1987.



Eric Woolfson e Alan Parsons non erano musicisti di professione: Alan Parsons (nato a Londra il 20 dicembre 1948) 

lavorava come ingegnere del suono presso gli studi della EMI di Abbey Road a Londra, dove nel 1969 collaborò con Geoff Emerick per Abbey Road dei Beatles. In seguito, Parsons continuò a collaborare con Paul McCartney e negli anni settanta lavorò per i Pink Floyd in Atom Heart Mother e The Dark Side of the Moon.

Lo scozzese Eric Woolfson (nato a Glasgow il 18 marzo 1945), avvocato di professione, cantante e pianista dilettante, aveva composto svariate canzoni per altrettanti svariati gruppi "beat" negli anni sessanta e nel decennio successivo avrebbe lavorato nel management del cantante di disco music Carl Douglas.

Nel 1974 Parsons e Woolfson si incontrarono. Eric divenne manager di Alan ed insieme decisero di creare un gruppo musicale "anomalo" con l'orchestra sempre presente (diretta da Andrew Powell) e con gli altri musicisti e cantanti come session-men. Pur apparendo nei crediti sempre insieme è probabile che Woolfson fosse il compositore dei brani cantati mentre Parsons si dedicava ad un brano strumentale per album ed alla produzione (dimostrazione è l'album Freudiana, nato come undicesimo album del Project ma pubblicato poi come album solista di Woolfson). Woolfson iniziò dal 1980 a prestare anche la voce in alcuni brani. Altra caratteristica del Project (ma anche dell'Alan Parsons solista) fu quella di trovare per ogni brano la voce che più si adattava.
