Alle 5000 Jahre stehen die Planeten unseres Sonnensystems einmal in einer Linie und diese Konstellation macht es moeglich, die Zeit zu kontrollieren, sofern man ein Artefakt besitzt, das eine untergegangene Zivilisation zu diesem Zwecke benutzt hat. Vorsichtshalber wurde dieses mystische Dreieck zweigeteilt und an den entgegengesetzten Enden der Welt versteckt. Doch die Illuminaten, eine Sekte, will die absolute Macht erringen und beauftragt den "Anwalt" Powell, die Haelften zu besorgen. Den Schluessel zum Versteck der ersten Haelfte besitzt die Archaeologin Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie), die allerdings noch nichtahnt, was ihr da in die Haende gefallen ist. Als Powell ihr diesen Schluessel, eine Art kosmische Uhr stiehlt, macht sie sich auf die Jagd, um den Planeten vor den Illuminaten und Powells Groessenwahn zu retten.
