LA CRITIQUE
Un sac plein de billets, la folle passion d'un couple en fuite prisonnier d'un destin inéluctable. Construit dans la grande tradition du film noir, 'The Square' n'a rien du simple hommage révérencieux purement formel. Instinctive et maîtrisée, cette première réalisation de Nash Edgerton est porteuse d'une réelle proposition cinématographique. Convulsive, la caméra donne une impression de mouvement perpétuel, à l'image du personnage principal, Raymond, sans cesse tiraillé entre son souci de la légalité et ses pulsions amoureuses. Un montage nerveux et sans esbroufe attire insensiblement le spectateur dans les entrelacs d'un récit dont le spectateur s'essaie, en vain, à deviner les ressorts. La structure de l'histoire alterne subtilement les séquences trépidantes avec les instants d'un quotidien plus apaisé, parvenant ainsi à rendre crédible les imprévus les plus improbables. Sans cesse entretenue, la tension s'intensifie crescendo jusqu'au tressaillement final. Principalement porté par le duo central Claire van der Boom et David Roberts, 'The Square' est une première oeuvre solide et cohérente à laquelle il ne manquerait peut-être qu'un soupçon de nuances.
