Surprisingly, the only DVD release of this ATV production is Region 1. The release is a 2-DVD set from Acorn Media (in case anyone's curious), and was released in April 2008.
Synopsis: (from Acorn Media, slightly edited for better reading)
Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson masterminded the naval victories that thwarted Napoleon’s plans to invade Britain. Amid public adulation, rumors swirled about his private life. Kenneth Colley (Admiral Piett, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi, John Sr., Holby Blue, Jesus, Monty Python's Life of Brian) stars with Geraldine James and Tim Pigott-Smith (V for Vendetta) in a lavish historical drama that examines Nelson through the eyes of his wife, his friend, his captain, and an ordinary seaman.
My Review: Despite the fact I naturally gravitate to naval movies and media, I was never overly fond of the fictional characters during the Napoleonic Era such as Horatio Hornblower.
Nelson is presented as a somewhat moody man with varying moods and desires, but wholly three dimensional, probably due to the fact Kenneth Colley knows how to act like an admiral, and for this production, Nelson! The supporting cast does a fine job as well, particularly Pigott-Smith, who makes for a perfect contrasting Captain Hardy. There are four parts to this mini-series and I'd rather not drag on explaining each one in great detail. They all stand on their own merit and have their own stories that are somewhat self-contained.
Anyway, take it how you will and don't let my silly review change your mind about watching this. They could have remastered it better, especially for the price, but it's wholly watchable. The extras are disappointing (non-existent except for a gallery).
There is some violence and adult situations, so showing this to the wee ones for Trafalgar Day is not advisable. :-P
