BBC Proms 2008: First Night of The Proms

Every year the Proms season gets a spruce-up, a revamp, or an extension into uncharted territory. This year is no different, with the first ever free Prom, all events made available for viewing/listening via BBC iPlayer, and (brace yourselves, traditionalists) . . . a Doctor Who Prom. The main difference you'll notice in tonight's opening concert is that BBC2's new-look coverage is hosted from a camera-ready snug tucked away in the Royal Albert Hall, the kind of mini-studio we usually see football pundits in, though with any luck it'll be less like an overlit airport lounge. Charles Hazlewood and Suzy Klein will introduce proceedings from this haven, and discuss the concert with guests and artists during the interval. It sounds a promising development, assuming they don't start asking vapid questions along the lines of "There's something special about the Proms, isn't there?" Tonight they're joined by Finnish soprano Karita Mattila, as she comes off stage from her performance of Strauss's Four Last Songs. Also on the bill is French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who plays Beethoven's Rondo in B flat major.
