Celebrity impersonator Kevin Bishop, the star of Channel 4’s award-winning comedy Star Stories, has been given his own sketch show. 


 


The series explores the world of TV and celebrity, with the impressions coming thick and fast. Bishop says he is proud of doing 42 sketches in 23 minutes in the opening episode alone. 





“It’s become impossible to have a sketch show where every single sketch appeals to every single person,” says Bishop. “But that’s the beauty of the sketch show; comedy’s subjective so there should be something there for everyone.” 





Unlike Mike Yarwood or Rory Bremner, his TV impressionist predecessors, Bishop comes from an acting background. This career change to impressionist was something he fell into after amusing friends in the playground or whiling away time as an actor between takes on set. Bishop started his career aged 11 when he won a role in The Sound of Music after an open audition. 





He then went on to play Sam Spalding in Grange Hill when he was 14 before getting his big break: acting opposite Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and Billy Connolly as Jim Hawkins in A Muppet Treasure Island. It’s a confusing, yet impressive, CV – from Muppet moppet to Channel 4’s latest comedy find. 





Bishop cites The Fast Show and Harry Enfield and Chums as inspirations (he refers his own series jokingly as “The Bloody Fast Show”) and says that “our show’s similar in energy and performance to The Fast Show. But it’s very camp, which is quite similar to Rock Profile [Matt Lucas and David Walliams’s 1999 venture, which featured a series of spoof interviews with the pair playing famous musicians].” 





The Kevin Bishop Show started life earlier this year as a pilot when Channel 4 broadcasted a comedy playhouse of six shows, including the comedy sitcom pilot Plus One, which was also commissioned as a series and starts later this year. “There were rumours that they were only going to commission one show and there was also a pilot with Adam Buxton, which I really thought they’d [Channel 4] pick up because they were looking for a new Blackadder, but they didn’t,” he says. “They picked ours up and we were so shocked, then relieved and then scared.”
