Een inbreker schiet midden in de nacht een man dood in zijn huis. Was het toeval of weet de familie er meer van? Op een nacht wordt er ingebroken in het huis van Ann Danville en haar man, gouverneur Tyler Danville. De inbreker schiet Tyler dood en laat zijn vrouw in pure paniek en vertwijfeling achter. De rouwende Ann wordt bijgestaan door haar stiefzoon Nathan, zijn nare verloofde Heather McManus en het huis- personeel. Door de brutale moord komt Nathans zus Hayley ineens weer in beeld, een schizofreen meisje dat wordt verwaarloosd in een psychiatrische instelling waar ze verblijft en die op de avond van de moord was ontsnapt.
