The True Stories documentary thread returns with George Carey's investigation into the mystery behind a massive explosion that shook Siberia in 1908: the Tunguska Incident. The epicentre in deepest Siberia was so remote that no-one went in to investigate for years.



It was 1928 before a scientist made it to the region and was able to see the effects of the blast. Over an area of some 800 square miles all of the trees had been blasted flat in a radial pattern out from the epicentre. This initial expedition started an 80 investigation into what really happened. Was it a meteorite, a comet, or something else entirely.



George's documentary doesn't look so much at the science behind what happened. He's much more interested in the sociological issues that the explosion threw up. There are the local Evenki nomads who regard the incident as a tragedy for their people visited upon them by the anger of their gods. Then there are scientists over the years who saw the chance of visiting the site - out of the way of the Communist party's commissars - as a place where they could have some freedom away from the constricts of Soviet society.
