The aftermath of every battle is human carnage on an unimaginable scale and no more so was the case during World War I.


One of the most demanding and heartbreaking jobs is that of the nurses, doctors and medical orderlies who tend to the wounded and the dying.


In this episode of Last Voices, the stories of those who tended to the injured are set alongside the victims - the gassed, the shell shocked and the amputees who always remembered who saved them.





At the heart of the series is powerful first person testimony of the Western Front and the Home Front in Britain. We see and hear dramatic stories from soldiers, airmen, POWs, the wounded, nurses, munitions workers, sweethearts and children. Their experience provides a unique insight into the extraordinary twists and turns of the war as the euphoria of 1914 turned into a grim struggle for survival by 1918.
