Thomas and Friends  is a children's television series first broadcast in 1984.  It follows the adventures of a group of trains and road vehicles who live on the fictional island of Sodor.



Prior to series 7 the programme was was named Thomas The Tank Engine And Friends.  Many of the stories in the first five series were taken directly from The Railway Stories  books by the Reverend W. Awdry.  The books were created from stories which Awdry told his son Christopher during his recovery from measles, with many stories based on events from Awdry's personal experience.



From series 6 onwards none of the programme episodes were based upon the books - instead new stories were created and additional characters introduced.  In series 7 the programme title was permanently shortened to Thomas And Friends.
