José Cura leads the star cast of Verdi’s blazingly passionate opera, in Elijah Moshinsky’s new Royal Opera House production co-produced with Teatro Real Madrid, with sets by the noted Italian film designer Dante Ferretti. With Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Count di Luna, Veronica Villarroel as Leonora, and Yvonne Naef as Azucena, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, is conducted by Carlo Rizzi.

"Elijah Moshinsky's production is surely as lively and moving as Verdi's intricate masterpiece deserves. Jose Cura sizzles. Dimitri Hvorostovsky is everything one could want to see and hear in a Verdi baritone. This new "Trovatore" DVD is a reminder that not every golden age happened long ago." - San Francisco Chronicle (USA)"

"All four are in excellent voice. Cura...supports Naef with beautiful quiet singing...Hvorostovsky is formidable... There are two other filmed Trovatore's available at present, for a combination of musical excellence and intelligent production neither comes close to this one." - International Record Review

I bought this just to give Jose Cura a chance as Manrico. I am afraid he disappointed me. He was too much as a brute, in addition to the wobbly singing. Dmitri Hvorostovsky's Count on the other hand is wonderful from start to finish. His acting as well as his singing is exemplary. The only thing that was intrusive was the sword fighting with Cura. It intruded much too much on the singing.

Veronica Villaroel's Leonora too was very good. Her acting and singing were blended very nicely. Yvonne Naef's Azucena was also good, but I thought she lacked the bite of Simionato's or Cossotto's interpretation of the vengeful gypsy.

I would have to say that Dmitri Hvorostovsky was the star here. This seemed for me to be a Trovatore with the Trovatore. Cura's wobbly voice was too much of a instrution for me enjoy the opera fully. The fact that he acted and sang like a brute and not like a passionate poet, as I see Manrico, may be the fault of the director of the production. The production was OK, but I'd would much prefer a traditional setting for this opera. But on the other hand were the sets and costumes consistant and better than other production of opera nowadays.

Carlo Rizzi's conducting was crisp and exciting. Overall is this performance good, if you can accept Manrico to be a wobbly brute. The picture on this DVD is very good with it's 16:9 image. The Dolby Digital 5.1 sound too is good, but it would be even better if the producers of the DVD would do the same as DG and added a DTS track. But it is very good nonetheless.

This DVD issue was drawn from a new production for the Royal Opera by Elijah Moshinsky, in conjunction with the Teatro Real, Madrid. It was recorded live on May 3, 2002 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and on the whole was a quite successful effort. It was Caruso who said that all Il Trovatore needed to succeed was the four greatest voices in the world. He made a point cleverly, but there's some truth to his claim – the opera does need a better-than-average performance to be effectively brought off owing to at least two major flaws: its libretto is ridiculous and its length is not justified. But you can't fault the music and Verdi's ability to convey drama.

This effort features the brilliant Dmitri Hvorostovsky in the role of Count di Luna and as usual he is dazzling for both his singing and dramatic abilities. I'm not sure anyone else could sing this role today with quite his intensity and imaginatively sinister manner. To judge from the applause at the performance's end, however, the audience's favorite performer that night was Yvonne Naef, whose Azucena was thoroughly convincing.

The two principals, José Cura and the very attractive Veronica Villarroel are also excellent here. This cast may not quite meet Caruso's ideal (what cast could?), but they surely come close. The chorus and orchestra turn in splendid work, too, as does conductor Carlo Rizzi and the other singers in the cast, Tomas Tomasson as Ferrando and Gweneth-Ann Jeffers as Ines. But, of course, in DVD recordings another factor must be considered: set designs. Here they are the work of Dante Ferretti and must be assessed as quite atmospheric and imaginative. But the darkish lighting, appropriate in many places throughout the opera, is a constant presence which some will regard as a drab feature. To me, the sets and lighting, in the end, fit the drama well, highlighting the grimmer aspects of this sordid story. Other viewers, I'll concede, will disagree.

Opera initiates, or those unfamiliar with this Verdi opera, will find the story hard to follow – but then that is a flaw of any production of this Verdi work, again, owing to the complex and at times silly libretto. The sound is vivid and the production lavish overall. This is an excellent Il Trovatore, with a stellar cast, and is well worth the attention of opera mavens.

We haven't had an opera upload for a while, so here's one of Verdi's great operas - Il Trovatore, The Troubadour.

There always seems to be a special atmosphere at Covent Garden, and the recording on this DVD is no exception. Sure, it's not the greatest Trovatore ever sung, but it is exciting, and, in my opinion, that's one of the main things about live opera - I'd take a flawed Leonora who can move me to tears over a perfect rendering every time.

Hvorostovsky as the Count puts in a spectacular performance - such venom.

If you only had 30 quid in your pocket and it was a choice between this DVD and a 1988 Nuits-St-Georges "Les Chaignots", I'd buy the wine. How lucky we are that TheBox obviates the need to make such difficult life-and-death decisions!
