A Day in the Death of Joe Egg - DVDRip 2003



I managed to acquire a copy of the original recording of this, so subsequently ripped it. I think a few people are after this.



Laurence Boswell's production of Peter Nichols' black comedy was the first in the West End since its opening in 1967. But how does a play that defined late 60s theatre, with its mocking humour and heartbreaking undercurrents, fare with the knowing, cynical audiences of today?

The answer: incredibly well. Boswell's production starts as it means to go on, as Eddie Izzard confidently delivers an opening monologue that sounds as if was written yesterday. When Izzard's schoolteacher Bri delivers a series of tickings-off and "we're all waitings" the laughter is not only at the sharp writing and spot-on acting, but at the evocativeness of the language, as we are catapulted with a smile right back to those faintly ludicrous teacher tantrums of yesteryear.
