BBC Superstars was an all-around sports competition that pitted elite athletes from different sports against one another in a series of athletic events resembling a decathlon. The format was originally developed in the USA before the BBC made it own version filmed at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace in August 1973 for later broadcast on New Year's Eve of the same year. The inurgral competition was captured by former 400 metre hurdles Olympic champion David Hemery. It was presented by David Vine with commentary by Ron Pickering. The show proved so popular that versions ran through and Europe and American until 1985.





The first European final saw nine athletes converge at the Ahoy Stadium in Rotterdam to crown the Superstars champion. The competitors were David Hemery (British athlete) , Malcolm Macdonald (British footballer), Ard Schenk and Harm Keipers (Dutch speed skaters), Guy Drut (French athlete), Jochen Mass (German motor racer), Alfons Brijdenbach (Belgium athlete), Mariano Haro (Spanish athlete) and Kjell Isaksson (Swedish athlete). Following five heats the host nation was allowed two entrants, Kuipers was invited as the runner-up in Sweden. The athletes took places in 100 metres, 800 metres cycling, gym tests, 50 metres swimming, pistol shooting, 150 metres rowing, tennis, penalty shoot-out, weightlifting and 600 metres steeplechase. The show was presented by David Vine and Ron Pickering.
