His credentials are impressive, having worked and studied closely with instructional guru Jim Blackley (author of Syncopated Rolls and The Essence Of Jazz Drumming) and himself a veteran of line-ups such as Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, Shirley Bassey, The London Symphony Orchestra, The BBC Big Band and many big West End shows.
The approach to this CD is simple. There are 18 tracks, each of around four minutes long. These tracks are recordings of an acoustic bass (Paul Morgan) and a guitar (Hugh Burns), playing standard jazz forms such as 12 bar blues and 32 bar rhythm changes. The bass part is panned to the left and the guitar to the right – handy if you wish to hear only one instrument during practice. The tracks are grouped into three 'development' sets: slow to medium tempo (40 to 80 BPM), medium to fast tempo (100 to 160 BPM) and fast tempo (180 to 340 BPM). The tempos and track lengths are listed on the sleeve notes, as are the structures and key signatures (such as 40 BPM, 12 bar Blues in F, 4.56m). This lends to the possibility of inviting a solo instrument to join the session. A sax or piano could also play along with these tracks.
The rest is simple. You press play, wait for the two bar click count-in and play along - a great exercise in time from the word go as you are given no click once the bass and guitar strike up. And the backing playing is most satisfying to work with. Allan himself sings the praises of both guitarist and bassist in the sleeve notes.
In any musical situation the hardest tempos are those of extreme slow and fast. Here the low BPM tracks are very spacious, lending themselves to brushes and an awareness for restraint without drag. The fast track at 340 BPM means a clear head and warm wrists are required. All the tracks are each spot on the tempo without loss of feel. They can be a pleasure to muck around with or a harsh masterclass in time and pace – a valuable lesson to any player. The variety is also welcome as there are tracks in 3/4 and one in 5/4 time – a chance to get your Joe Morello hat on.
