Torrent description

James and the Giant Tree 17-06-2009

Professional tree climber James Aldred climbs one of Britain's tallest trees, a giant redwood affectionately called Goliath, and sleeps in its branches.

James has always loved climbing trees. The first time he used ropes to climb Goliath, he was 16 years old; he was absolutely terrified and didn't get further than the first branch. In this programme he returns to climb the tree, even spending the night in a hammock two thirds of the way up.

Also, one of Britain's leading tree experts, Tony Russell, offers an insight into the history and natural history of the giant redwood, or Wellingtonia as it is also known. The largest of them grow in the United States, but they have become icons in the British countryside since their introduction in the 18th century.

From The Radio Times

Any Victorian gentleman keen to keep up with the Ponsonby Joneses next door would import a giant redwood tree from California. And thus were they introduced to this country. Their immense height, enormous girth and spongy bark leave them to stand out as the colossi of British woodland. In this delightful programme-it's my absolute favourite of the week - professional tree-climber James Aldred returns to Goliath, a giant redwood that he and his friends named when they were teenagers. He cannot reveal in which part of the country it stands because the Forestry Commission fear such information will encourage people to climb it. But he does tell us just about everything you need to know not only for scaling one of these giants, but also how to get a rucksack, a hammock and a decent supply of food up there with you.
