Alyssa vient de perdre sa mère vit depuis un an avec sa grand-mère. Elle est alors envoyée chez son père, alors qu´elle ignorait jusqu´à son existence. Ce dernier s´occupe d´une réserve naturelle pour les dauphins aux Bahamas. Outre la difficulté de s´habituer à son nouvel environnement, la jeune fille s´entend assez mal avec ce nouveau père. Mais elle se découvre un don pour communiquer avec les cétacés, tandis que les pouvoirs en place menacent de fermer la réserve.
