Nel 1945 Ada Sereni lasciò i suoi tre figli in Palestina – dove viveva da diciotto anni - e raggiunse l'Italia per ritrovare il marito scomparso un anno prima, quando vi era clandestinamente arrivato per una pericolosa missione mentre era ancora in corso la seconda guerra mondiale. Approdata in un paese distrutto da anni di combattimenti, impoverito e desideroso di ritrovare il senso della vita e della speranza nel futuro, venne subito coinvolta dal movimento chiamato Aliàh Bet che organizzava clandestinamente l'espatrio degli ebrei sopravvissuti allo sterminio nazista.
