Deutschland 1939
Im Jahr 1905 baut Ingenieur Oliver Montstuart (Hans Albers) in Kanada mit Hunderten von Arbeitern an einer Wasserleitung, die in die Stadt Canitoga führen soll. Zahlreiche Sabotageakte werfen das Projekt ständig zurück. Ausgerechnet Oliver wird dafür verantwortlich gemacht. Der Beschuldigte flieht in die Berge und verdreht später der Frau des Chefingenieurs den Kopf. Nach einem weiteren Sabotagefall gibt es für Oliver nur eine letzte Möglichkeit, das Bersten des Staudamms zu verhindern.
Der große Erfolg des Filmes lag unter anderem an dem Song "Goodbye, Johnny", den Hans Albers in der Hauptrolle zum Besten geben durfte. Der blonde Hans von der Waterkant war einmal mehr großartig als tragischer, gebrochener Held, der aus dem ansonsten bisweilen recht rührseligen, einfach konstruierten Abenteuerfilm ein ansehnliches Werk machte.
