"One of the deepest strategy games there is"
This game is one of my favorite turn based strategy games of all time, up there with the RTK series (greater, in my opinion, than half the RTK series). This game was developed by Holistic-Design, and sadly, suffered a foolish marketing plan by Segasoft, and did not sell well. But even today, there are many fans, still playing (PBEM, play be e-mail games), and it is truly awesome.
To understand what makes this so great, many things must be taken into account.
Graphics: 8
The sprite graphics are not all that great, but the way the planets are put together when the hex grid is taken off, it looks rich and beautiful, even the random worlds. The 3D models of the armored units is excellent, the menus are done well, and the art is very good. The introduction FMV is very good for PC in 1996-1997.
Gameplay: 10
This game is beyond deep. It is based on the ''Fading Suns'' universe, where the universe may be cliche, but it brings everything together so well and excellently told, that playing this game will make you want to learn more about the universe (and their RPG game, I bought some of their books, even though I don't role play, but just reading them, is great in itself). This game is essentially turn based strategy, you have cities, you produce many different resources as well as many different types of units. There is space, land, sea, air, and hover (made by others, another thing great about this game, it's nearly fully customizable). With the patches, and PBEM, this game never gets old. PBEM games can actually last 2+ YEARS. So if you want to play a lot, you'd just join a bunch. But this game, in length/depth, wins out over almost all. Playing against human players in this game, with diplomacy, is unprecedented at this level.
This game is incredibly deep, but sadly, it is not very good against the AI. Some scenarios have been made to make it extremely challenging, but nothing beats playing against humans in this game. I'd say it is the most enjoyable online experience I have ever had.
Sound: 8
Sound effects are lacking. There aren't many, and they get repetitive. The music is very good though, with 10 or 11 tracks. They are great for the mood of the game, very gothic, dark, and mysterious.
Replay: 10
Absurd. I already discussed about the PBEM part, playing against humans on random galaxy, the intrigue of diplomacy, I will probably never stop playing this game, as a sequel will probably never be made. This is such a great game, and I can't stress that enough. It makes up for technical lacking, with depth and fun factor.
Overall: 9
Awesome game. If you want to know more about this game, e-mail me, I'm part of an EFS community and more players are always welcome.
