Well, what's the point of reviewing a 9-year-old record by a band that no longer exists?First of all,it is a good album, especially considering it was a debut by a then-at-the-time very young band. Most of the songs are well-written and catchy and the band displays a high level of musicianship. My only gripes are that lead singer Kimi tends to take the same vocal approach to just about every song. She is a good singer, but she needs to change up her style more often ala Paul McCartney. Also, there's a bit too many filler-type songs here. The songwriting, while generally very good, could be more consistent.Ok,we've established that this is a good record. Now why did Elektra dump M&C?Probably the usual reasons:1.not enough record sales 2.personnel changes within the record company 3.management shakeups in the record company 4. the record company was impatient and didn't let the band develop a following 5.all of the above. It's too bad, because these kids had a lot of potential but I guess you can't make money from just potential. If any former members of Moonpools&Caterpillars ever readthis, here's some advice:Strap those guitars back on and give it another shot. You don't need major label validation to be a successful band.Additional:Since I have written this review,I've listened to Moonpools&Caterpillars second never-released album called "12 Songs".It's a better, more consistent record than "Lucky Dumpling".Many of my gripes about "Dumpling" had been addressed. It's too bad they broke up soon after "12 Songs" was recorded.
