Volendo abbandonare una Berlino deprimente e violenta, Bruno, un timido outsider, va a cercare fortuna in America, accompagnato da uno strampalato vecchietto e da una prostituta in fuga dal suo protettore. Negli Usa i tre cadranno "dalla padella alla brace". 





Film interpretato tutto da attori non professionisti (a parte Eva MAttes), è un singolarissimo roadmovie, un caso a sé nella filmografia herzoghiana che rappresenta, per il suo poetico e struggente realismo, una delle opere più toccanti e commosse del regista monacense.
